About the Project
Blackshaw Primary School came to us asking if we could transform their EYFS area into a stimulating, bright and colourful play space, where their pupils could take part in various physical activity that would target different learning goals.
We installed a large Construction Area, encouraging the children could role play whilst, learning a variety of skills. We incorporated elements that replicated a real-life construction site such as a large sand area, Bucket and Pully System, a Builders yard to store tools and materials, and a Work Bench with Hangers to store their High Vis Vests and Hard Hats.
A Messy Play Area sparks children’s curiosity and encourages ‘child-led’ learning opportunities. Our Mud Kitchen allows children to collaborate with each other, improving their language skills as they describe their different processes and recipes . Using different kitchen tools and weighing scales, helps them develop their fine motor skills and basic math’s. A chalk board provides the opportunity for children to express themselves and develop their handwriting skills. Our Mushroom Table and Seats is not just a great place to socialise but to lay out everything they have cooked up together in the kitchen.
Adding another element of Messy Play we installed one of our largest Sand Pits with Removeable Covers and two Bucket and Pulley System, to create endless hours of play value and creativity. The Sleeper surround retains the sand infill.
Large sections of the playground where often left muddy and unusable and therefore the school chose to invest heavily in the central artificial grass area to get the most out of the space and allow it to be used all year round. We can be clever in where we install the messy play areas/construction zones/sandpits as these naturally tidy up a space with the retention and add a surface related to the play activity, this is a great way to do things on a budget.
An existing climbing unit that was installed by ourselves a number of years prior was also given new lease of life with a new wetpour skim below and a tidy up. The Compact Action Zone was variation on an existing Action Structure so that we could fit within a specific existing footprint. The unit comprising of treated timber, HDPE plastic, powder coated steel and rope elements was slightly more challenging than we would usually suggest for an EYFS environment but after working closely with the teachers, they felt the children would benefit from the additional challenge. This being an example of how pivotal a collaborative approach between ourselves and the people working closely alongside the students and equipment is to creating a successful playground with longevity.
