About the Project

The customer and the Objectives

At College Park School, we had the privilege of transforming an uninspiring playground into an engaging, inclusive space that aligns with the school’s dedication to supporting children and young people with autism and complex learning difficulties. Collaborating with the teaching staff and the Head Teacher, we brought their design ideas to life, resulting in a vibrant area that enhances both play and learning.

Our Approach

We brightened the space with new surfacing, creating distinct zones that make the playground more welcoming and friendly. A bike track was incorporated to encourage physical play and role play, offering children a fun and active way to develop coordination and social skills. The trim trail further supports gross motor development, while the inclusive nest swings and in-ground trampolines promote enjoyment and sensory engagement for all students.

A customised Double Tower Climbing Frame, featuring a rock ramp, pull-up rope, HDPE slide, suspended bridge, play platforms, and a net ladder, provides opportunities for imaginative play while also enhancing gross motor skills. This diverse equipment encourages children to challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

We also created a shaded area with a sail cover where children can engage in messy play using the water play system and tuff trays, perfect for discovery-based learning and fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world. Continuing with this nature theme, we revitalised an unused wooded area at the back of the playground, turning it into a Forest School. Here, children can explore nature in a calming environment, with mushroom seats, tables, and two hammocks offering spaces for quiet reflection and sensory exploration.

Summary

Overall, the new playground provides a wide range of age appropriate playground equipment, that cater to the diverse needs of the children at College Park, supporting their physical, emotional, and sensory development, while also offering teachers new ways to engage students in meaningful learning experiences.

“The children love their new playground it works so well whatever the weather! Our children absolutely love the sandpit and the bespoke treehouse! They especially enjoy building dens underneath the treehouse, turning it into their own little hideaway.”
