Meadowbank Primary School

The school wanted us to provide a space that would inspire the children to learn and develop by providing different experience and opportunities.

About the Project

We had the pleasure to work with Meadowbank Primary School in Cardiff, who are a special school supporting children aged 4-11 years with a range of complex learning needs & learning disabilities. The teachers expressed that they wanted a play space that would provide as much opportunity and experience as a mainstream school has to offer. We made this our mission and kept the School’s motto at the forefront of our mind, ‘Belong, Inspire & Flourish.’

We thought it would be a great idea to make use of the impressive tree which stood within the school playground, by turning this into an eye catching Tree House Play Structure that now brings so much excitement. The structure invites the children to step up or climb the log wall to explore the platform, before riding the slide back down, creating a mix of imaginative and physical play in the mystical woods.

We incorporated a Crawl Tunnel Mound, which encourages the children in more physical activity and allows them to discover what their bodies can do in the sense of building strength and coordination.

Within the EYFS area we laid our artificial grass that is drainable, hard-wearing and comfortable to walk and sit on. The blend of artificial grass and areas of Rubber mulch created a more natural looking environment with identifiable dedicated areas for play. It also allows children to have access to the playground all year round.

We incorporated our Interactive Water Wall with Rocky River Bed, to encourage interaction, teamwork and the development of social bonds among the pupils. The Water Wall is a great way for children to explore and understand the natural element of water. The water is collected and stored in a reservoir hidden beneath the Rocky River bed and is then drawn to the different play elements through different pumps. The cart iron pump draws water to the top of the timber troughs which the water cascades down onto the rocky river bed. There is there also a hand pump to draw water to the top of the water wall where it then cascades down interchangeable chutes and accessories. Again this water flows back on to the rocky riverbed and deposited into the reservoir, the bridge incorporated across the riverbed allows the children to wander over and take part in imaginative play amongst the tranquil sounds of the surrounding water.

Our Mud Kitchen creates a great Messy Play environment, allowing children to interact with natural materials in a contained space; which is easy to clean down after. It allows the children to let their imaginations run wild, with a realistic looking timber kitchen with hob rings. Language skills can be developed as the children explain their processes and discuss their recipe. Balancing buckets will teach children basic mathematics, as well as showing how cause and effect works. Our Mushroom Table and Seats, also allow the children to socially interact with one another whilst they serve up what they’ve put together in the kitchen.

Our Timber Playhouse and Wicker Nest Hut are great places for story telling, role playing and creating unique play experiences, whilst building relationships with peers. Our cosy Wicker Nest Hut are the perfect place for children to take a break away from the busy playground.

“After obtaining three quotes for our playground project, we decided to go with Playground Imagineering for the following reasons: I was very impressed with their presentation and proposal as they planned the project with our needs in mind and I felt I was receiving a bespoke service rather than an off the peg solution. As a result the product matches our needs and that of the site perfectly. They were always professional,  responsive and when changes were requested, they were dealt with smoothly and without question. I would have no hesitation in recommending Playground Imagineering.”
