About the Project

The Customer and Objectives

When College Park School set out to reimagine the outdoor space at their Pimlico site, they were looking for more than just new equipment. They wanted a playground that truly reflected their vision: a space that fosters independence, embraces sensory diversity, and unlocks learning through play.

Having already collaborated with College Park at their Hallfield site, we were familiar with their ethos and the specific needs of their pupils. This insight allowed us to design a playground that not only promotes fun but also supports growth, regulation, confidence, and social development.

Our Approach

Our design process began with a deep understanding of the school’s values, the developmental needs of the pupils, and how outdoor play could support learning objectives. We worked closely with the staff to identify key priorities, including:

  • Inclusivity and accessibility – ensuring all pupils can engage with the play equipment.
  • Sensory-rich experiences – providing opportunities for stimulation and calm spaces as needed.

  • Active and creative play – promoting physical activity, imagination, and social interaction.

By combining these priorities with innovative design solutions, we created a space that encourages exploration, independence, and confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

Play in Motion Zone

This active area is designed to encourage movement, balance, and cooperative play:

  • Bike track with crossings, directional arrows, and a timber bridge to develop coordination and awareness.

  • Group swing, crawl-through play mound, and two inground trampolines for inclusive, high-energy fun.

  • Calming sensory pergola providing a quiet space for reflection and social interaction.

  • Colourful surfacing featuring floral graphics and half-pitch markings to stimulate visual engagement and imaginative play.

Physical and Creative Play Zones

Encouraging imagination, exploration, and sensory development, this area includes:

  • Tower play unit with steps, slide, rope ladder, and rock ramp to challenge physical skills.

  • Modular water unit, sandbox, and tactile tuff trays to promote hands-on learning and creativity.

  • Musical and sensory panels catering to a range of sensory needs and supporting inclusive play.

  • Soft surfacing for comfort and safety during active play.

Summary

Our collaboration with College Park School demonstrates the transformative effect of a thoughtfully designed playground. The new outdoor space has encouraged children to be more active, imaginative, and confident, while also supporting their emotional regulation and cognitive development. Through engaging play experiences, pupils are developing social skills, problem-solving abilities, and a greater sense of independence. The enthusiastic feedback from staff and families, along with the school’s celebratory event, highlights how much the playground has enriched the children’s learning, wellbeing, and overall enjoyment.
