About the Project
Elm Tree Community Primary School based in Skelmersdale, cater for children who have a statement for Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties. Therefore creating a stimulating and engaging play space that meet the individual needs of each child was essential.
We collaborated with the teachers to design a Multi Sensory Construction Area, which allows the children to play and maneuver natural materials such as Sand, Shingle and Bark. We incorporated different play elements within the area for the children to interact with such as a Sand Bowl with Sieve, Sand Wheel, Sand Chute, Material Transported, Lift and Digger. All of these allow the children to interact and control the movement of sand, shingle and Bark within the pits and play platform built within this area. Since installing this area the school have confirmed it is having an extremely positive affect on each individual child.
As another sensory area we installed a Waterproof Shelter with a Multicoloured Panelled Roof, which casts shadows of colour. It is a great area for the children to relax and socialise with their peers. At the side of the shelter we also placed a number of planters for the children to dig plant their own flowers, herbs and vegetables. This type of activity is a great way to learn more about the natural world we live and it give the children responsibility.
Adjacent to the Construction Area we installed a Double Seated Swing for the children to take part in physical activity using all there strength and muscles to enjoy gliding back and forth through the air.
