About the Project
Heston Primary School based in London were having trouble with an existing sand pit situated in front of their school building, which was prone to flooding and inevitably became unusable. The teachers at the school wanted a new sandpit that could be accessible all year round. We accepted this challenge and wasted no time in designing something that would not only be eye catching, but create excitement across the school.
In order for the children to get the most out the sandpit and use in all weather conditions, we gave the sandpit a polycarbonate waterproof roof and provided optional side panels with windows. These panels can be fixed down, rolled back up at any time and they are also easy to clean. We also installed a timber post retention around the sides of the sand pit to keep sand within the dedicated playing area.
The size of this sandpit also allows children to work independently or in groups as they take turn using different tools and explore natural elements. Inside of the sandpit we added a Play Platform and Bucket with Pulley System to encourage role play. Their imagination and language are broadened as they story tell and explain their different processes.
We have since worked with the school on a number of other smaller projects which include bonded rubber mulch surfacing in the same EYFS area, a Sleeper Sandpit with removable covers, a variety of repairs to their existing timber trail and a new picket fence with viewing windows around an existing pond on the site.
