About the Project
St Edmund’s Primary School had an existing outdoor garden space, which had become no longer fit for purpose, due to the uneven mix match of surfaces, large planters that had rotting log retention and tired benches. The teachers asked if we could give the space a new lease of life and to make it warm and welcoming for both pupils and teachers.
We began by leveling out the surface to remove all trip hazards and to create a less disjointed area. We laid a mix of brown and green Artificial Grass to not only created zoned areas but to create a natural flow through the garden. We also designed around two existing planters so these were part of the entrance into the garden, with charming timber Gated Archways at both ends.
We wanted to ensure this area was a tranquil space for the children and teachers to come together, socialise, reflect and to build relationships. We installed numerous Bench Seating, Picnic Benches and surrounding Tree Seating to not only create hang out areas for bonding but to allow a place for the children to come away from the hustle and bustle of the playground to either read or just to destress. We installed custom planters for children to dig and plant their own flowers and vegetables, to gain a better understanding of the world, improve on their fine motor skills and have a sense of responsibility.
In addition to placing numerous planters throughout the garden, we aimed to enhance its visual appeal further by incorporating Trellis Panels. These panels provide support for climbing plants and flowers, cultivating a lively and enchanting atmosphere for children to explore and unwind in. We installed our Insect Hotel onto a tranquil tree within the school grounds, aiming to draw in numerous bugs and wildlife for the children to explore and discover. The presence of diverse wildlife will engage the children’s senses and establish a peaceful natural setting.
Our custom made compost planter with viewing window provides an educational and engaging experience, allowing users to observe the activity oof growing flowers, plants and vegetables in nutrient-rich compost. This not only serves as a hands-on learning tool for understanding the sprouting process, but also promotes environmental awareness and sustainability practices. In order to inspire children to engage more actively with nature further, we constructed our Weather Station to enhance their understanding of different weather conditions and patterns. This initiative not only fosters hands-on experience but also contributes to expanding the children’s scientific knowledge.
Our high quality stainless steel Musical Panel instruments build a sense of curiosity, improve observational skills, enhance memory and attention spans. Promoting inclusivity and freedom of expression in childhood development is crucial. Providing children with the chance to use exciting and engaging equipment in your playground design allows them the space to create and explore in their own unique ways.
Next to the Garden Area, we set up a spacious Timber Outdoor Classroom to encourage collaborative learning in a distinctive and natural setting. Conducting lessons outdoors has the potential to inspire young minds, fostering increased engagement and creativity. This approach not only reduces stress levels but also enhances a child’s overall well-being, promoting greater happiness.
