The goal was to offer students an expansive space that promotes free and independent movement while facilitating the development of both fine and gross motor skills.
About the Project
We have had the delightful experience of collaborating with Beaumont Primary School over several years. Our main objective was to create an aesthetically pleasing outdoor environment in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) area. The goal was to offer students an expansive space that promotes free and independent movement while facilitating the development of both fine and gross motor skills. Additionally, we aimed to provide an enriching setting that encourages sensory experiences for the pupils.
We began by resurfacing their EYFS area, incorporating our robust artificial grass to enhance its visual appeal and create a warm, natural atmosphere. Furthermore, we constructed bamboo privacy screening along the perimeter walls to ensure the protection and privacy of the children within the space.
we introduced a Corner Stage to the space, complete with planters, modular bench seating, and rubber mushroom seats. This thoughtful addition not only fosters role-playing activities but also serves as a platform for children to enhance their storytelling and performance skills, promoting confidence-building experiences. To further stimulate creativity and fine motor skills, we installed Mark Making Boards, featuring both chalkboard and dry wipe board surfaces, along with educational play panels like an abacus.
Moreover, we implemented a Sensory Pathway surrounding the performance area, strategically designed to introduce varied textures for children to explore on the playground. This not only encourages sensory engagement but also contributes to the holistic development of the children, providing a stimulating environment for them to hone their sensory awareness and exploratory skills.
Integrating our Up and Over Log Den into the design, we created a space that fosters imaginative play, providing opportunities for pupils to enhance their balance and strength as they navigate over and under the structure. Additionally, a Timber Play Shop Panel was introduced to promote ongoing role-playing activities. This not only supports the expansion of children’s vocabulary as they articulate their actions but also facilitates interaction with their peers.
To further enrich the learning environment, den-making posts were strategically incorporated, encouraging children to acquire new skills in constructing dens. This initiative not only enhances their individual abilities but also promotes teamwork as they collaborate in the exciting process of building and creating together. The Wicker Teepee serves as a secure retreat for children, offering a tranquil space where they can seek refuge from the lively atmosphere of the playground. It also serves as an ideal setting for storytelling and imaginative play, allowing children to engage in creative narratives as they playfully hide from imaginary monsters outside.
We introduced a Music Play Frame for children to hang various musical instruments off, whether that be pot and pans or chimes, to provide children with a sensory-rich experience. This not only cultivates curiosity but also contributes to the development of fine motor skills and enhances memory as the pupils engage with the diverse elements of sound and rhythm.
Lastly for the schools EYFS area we designated sandpit to inspire children to engage in messy play within a defined space. Here, children have the freedom to play either independently or collaboratively in groups, taking turns with various tools and exploring the wonders of natural elements. This environment provides opportunities for hands-on activities, mathematical explorations, and scientific discoveries, fostering limitless possibilities for interactive learning with their classmates.
Transitioning to the KS1 & KS2 school playground, we laid artificial grass around existing features like a shelter and tire park. This initiative aimed to revitalise damaged wetpour and worn-out artificial grass, enhancing the overall appearance of the space. Additionally, we introduced an Imaginative Play Train made of plastic HDPE, fostering creative play opportunities for the students.
